A planning application has been submitted for the conversion of the former Harringay Seventh Day Adventist Church on Cavendish Road, which has been vacant since late September 2023, according to the planning application submitted to Haringey Council.
The building, once a place of worship, is proposed to house the new community centre.
Detailed in the planning statement accompanying the application, the centre will offer “cultural, educational, and social facilities for the local population”.
The building sits in the Harringay Ladder neighbourhood, according to the plans.
According to the planning statement, the centre aims to provide activities such as community meetings, cultural activities, and educational support sessions.
Importantly, there will be no on-site cooking, and only hot or cold drinks and pre-prepared cold sandwiches will be available.
The centre is set to remain open from 12.30pm to 5pm, seven days a week.
The area around the building has good public transport links, including bus routes on Green Lanes, with nearby railway stations also providing easy access.
Parking facilities include pay-and-display bays available on Cavendish Road, Green Lanes, and nearby side streets.
The facilities will mainly serve locals within walking distance, which means the majority of visitors are expected to arrive on foot.
Cultural, social, and educational benefits to the community have been cited as the proposal’s main advantage, “strengthening community cohesion”, according to the planning notes.
The conversion plan complies with Haringey Council’s local plans and the London Plan 2021 policies, as well as the National Planning Policy Framework, which supports the development of community facilities and the reuse of existing buildings.
The development involves no materials to be used externally and does not contribute to the loss of garden land.
The building is set to offer cycling facilities, providing three cycle spaces, and will be connected to the main sewer for waste management.
Moreover, there are no proposed changes in vehicular or pedestrian access to the public highway, no alterations or additional public roads, rights of way, or diversions.
In the sphere of water management, the proposal does not include provisions for harvesting of rainfall or re-use of grey water.
Although the planning statement does not foresee an increase in flood risk, a sustainable drainage system is set to be used.
The planning application was formally submitted to Haringey Council on November 26, 2025 by Mr Yilmaz Guccuk, with Mr Erdal Aslan from Atlas Licensing acting as the agent.
