The London-bound A3 has been shut near Ripley Bypass in Surrey for over 14 hours since early this morning (January 15).
Police were called at around 1.40am to reports of two loose horses being hit by a lorry on the A3.
Shortly after, a separate call came in about a crash with a car and a third horse.
A Surrey Police spokesperson said: “Sadly, three horses were found deceased at the scene upon officer arrival.
“The road has temporarily been closed and diversions in place as Highways England look to carefully remove the deceased horses from the main road.”
Specialist clean up works are ongoing on the A3 northbound between the A247 Burnt Common and the B2039 Ockham.
National Highways is unable to give an estimated time for the road reopening.
A spokesperson said: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.
“Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
Surrey Police are speaking with the drivers of both vehicles as part of their enquiries.
