Wicked co-stars Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey will reunite in the new production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical in summer 2027.
Performances of the production will take place at the Barbican Centre.
Theatre enthusiasts can expect a revival of the Broadway show which originally debuted in 1984, telling the tale of Georges Seurat as he completes his iconic artwork, A Sunday Afternoon On The Island Of La Grande Jatte.
The musical explores the complexities faced by a fictionalised Seurat, more notably in his relationships, particularly with his lover and muse Dot, while navigating through his artistic vision.
Grande’s and Bailey’s specific roles in the production are yet to be announced.
They will be available from May 2026, exclusively through the official Barbican website and box office.
Directed by the Olivier award-winning Marianne Elliott, Sunday In The Park With George is produced by Empire Street Productions and presented in association with the Barbican.
Designed by Tom Scutt, the play’s music and lyrics are credited to Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine has a book.
Other interesting details have yet to be revealed.
This new production comes on the heels of both actors’ performances in the recent film adaptation of Wicked, a major hit globally.
Grande as Glinda and Bailey as Fiyero saw their roles particularly lauded, with Grande even bagging an Oscar nomination.
The duo first teased the announcement on Instagram, sharing a snapshot of themselves with Bailey sitting before Seurat’s painting.
The image was complemented by a caption referencing a song from Sunday In The Park With George.
The caption said: “All it has to be is good.”
The music industry is no stranger to Ariana Grande, the 32-year-old powerhouse with two Grammy awards and seven UK number-one singles.
Since the release of her debut album Yours Truly in 2013, her fame has soared.
Jonathan Bailey, 37 years old, has marked his presence on the West End, recently starring in Richard II last year.
He also appeared in a gender-swapped revival of Company in 2019, a performance that won him an Olivier Award.
Sunday in the Park with George is being produced by Empire Street Productions in association with the Barbican.
Further details regarding the production are yet to be unveiled.
