A fly-through video released on Tuesday, January 13, showcases the future vision for Liverpool Street station, which has been reimagined to support rising passenger numbers.
The station was recently named the UK’s busiest for the third consecutive year, logging nearly 100 million rail entries and exits.
With forecasts predicting up to 158 million passengers by 2041, Network Rail says more than 200 million people could be passing through in the decades ahead.
Ellie Burrows, managing director for eastern at Network Rail, said: “This really shows how the transformed Liverpool Street could better serve our customers, offering more space, improved accessibility and a station designed for future demand.
“It’s time London Liverpool Street, the capital’s gateway to the city, became a destination in its own right, delivering for passengers both today and for generations to come.”
The upgraded design has attracted significant support, with more than 1,000 people backing the plans on the City of London’s planning portal and nearly 2,000 individual comments submitted during public consultation.
Passenger feedback has shaped the proposals, with step-free access and improved lifts and escalators listed as top concerns.
Plans include a much larger concourse to address crowding, step-free access across all platforms and eight new lifts.
Escalators will increase from four to ten, and additional ticket barriers are planned to ease queues.
Improved toilets, family facilities on every level and clearer signage will also be introduced.
The scheme is led by Network Rail and its property development arm, Platform4.
A new office building will be constructed above the concourse.
This has been designed to better reveal the Grade II* listed Andaz Hotel and positively respond to the conservation area and protected views.
Network Rail has worked with accessibility advocates, heritage groups and neighbouring businesses to refine the designs.
The proposals aim to enhance the landmark entrances on Liverpool Street, Bishopsgate and Exchange Square.
Improved wayfinding, along with new east-west and north-south connections with the City, are also planned.
