A casualty on the tracks was reported to the British Transport Police at Ingatestone railway station at around 11.50pm today (December 31).
Officers were dispatched alongside paramedic colleagues, where a patient was located.
The person was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the time of reporting, all lines between Shenfield and Witham have been closed to allow for emergency services to work safely at the scene.
A spokesperson for BTP said: “Officers were called to Ingatestone railway station at 11.48am today (31 December) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.”
