The game, which kicked off at 12.30pm today (December 6), was halted in the 13th minute when a fan reportedly required urgent help in the lower tier of the Covered End.
According to The Guardian, the referee, Matthew Donohue, was alerted to the situation after Charlton supporters called out to get his attention.
He then took the players off the pitch and into the changing rooms while the supporter received treatment.
There was a pause of around 45 minutes while officials considered whether the game could continue.
The match was later confirmed as abandoned, as reported by The Mirror.
On Instagram, a Charlton Athletic spokesperson said: “Due to a medical emergency in the crowd, today’s match has been abandoned.
“We thank you for your patience and understanding.
“Everyone at the club sends their best wishes to the supporter affected and thank our medical team and first responders.
“Information on when the match will be rescheduled will be announced in due course.”
On Instagram, a spokesperson for Portsmouth FC said: “This afternoon’s match at The Valley has been abandoned due to a medical incident in the crowd.”
We have approached the London Ambulance Service for a statement clarifying the nature of the incident.
