The Passchendaele Charity Tournament, held at Grays, included a mixed-age team from Romford who finished runners-up to the home side.
The team started strongly, defeating Grays “A” 3-0 with contributions from Paul Poole, Mick Harris, and Damian O’Reilly.
They then faced Billericay, where despite creating many chances, they couldn’t break the deadlock due to a standout performance from the opposing goalkeeper.
A goal from Mick Harris that was initially awarded was later disallowed by the referee, resulting in a goalless draw.
Similarly, a match with Grays “B”, who eventually won the tournament, also ended scoreless.
In their final game against Grays Allstars, Romford dominated but only managed to score one goal despite hitting the post three times and having several shots expertly saved by the Allstars’ keeper.
The goal, scored by Mick Harris, seemed to secure victory until the Allstars levelled with a speculative shot which took a slight deflection, which just took it out of reach of Clements in the Romford goal.
Despite not losing a single game and conceding only one goal throughout the tournament, Romford ended up as runners-up.
However, it was noted that the real victory was for the charity.
The players involved in the competition included Neil Clements, Sean Mallett, Tom Lemon, Ray Sapsford, Keith Rogers, Mick Harris, Damian O’Reilly, and Paul Poole.
Romford Walking FC held their annual presentation evening at The Royal British Legion in Hornchurch.
They celebrated their players of the year across various categories and triumphs, including winning the Essex Walking Football League Over 60’s Cup.
