The Atlantic Salmon 50p coin was sold for £70.76 on eBay last week. In 2023, it became the rarest 50p in circulation.
The coin was minted as part of eight new designs following His Majesty King Charles III’s accession to the throne.
With a circulating mintage of just 200,000, the coin knocked the Kew Gardens 50p off the top spot, becoming the rarest 50p in circulation.

The listing describes the coin as ‘a rare collectible’, which ‘is a sought-after addition to any coin collection’.
The listing reads: “The 2023 Atlantic Salmon 50p coin is a rare collectible from Great Britain, featuring a design of an Atlantic Salmon on the reverse.
“This base metal coin, with a fineness of 0.5, was issued in 2023 during the reign of King Charles III.
“Circulated, this unique coin is a sought-after addition to any coin collection, showcasing a piece of British heritage and wildlife.”
One keen collector paid the hefty £70.76 buy-it-now listing price plus £2.70 postage to snap up the 50p piece.
That means the coin was sold for a little over 141 times its shop value and will be sure to have Brits checking their change.
The Atlantic Salmon was chosen as one of eight designs representing flora and fauna from across all four UK nations.
Although wild populations of the Atlantic salmon are affected by factors such as river pollution, habitat loss, overfishing, and climate change, this wild fish can be found in very clean rivers in Scotland and Wales, as well as in North and South West England.
