In Croydon, residents are invited to join The Civic Mayor, The Executive Mayor and other community leaders on Sunday (November 9) for a traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph on Katharine Street at 10.30am.
There will be a two minutes’ silence, followed by a short service of remembrance.
The Civic Mayor, Councillor Richard Chatterjee, and the Deputy Lieutenant of Croydon, Colonel Ray Wilkinson, will lead the wreath-laying followed by the Royal British Legion, Executive Mayor Jason Perry, civic and faith representatives, members of the military and residents.
Anyone who wishes to lay a wreath may do so.
Those who wish to lay a wreath should meet outside the Spread Eagle pub on Katharine Street at 10:20am and will be invited to lay it when it’s their turn.
Later that day at 3pm, Croydon Minster will hold a Remembrance Service which members of the public are invited to attend.
A further two-minutes’ silence will be observed at the Cenotaph on Katharine Street at 11am on Armistice Day on Tuesday (November 11).
This will be led by the Civic Mayor, Councillor Richard Chatterjee, and the Deputy Lieutenant of Croydon, Colonel Ray Wilkinson, Executive Mayor Jason Perry, and other civic leaders.
Civic Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Richard Chatterjee said: “Our community will come together this month to honour the courage of those who served to protect our freedoms.
“We invite residents to join us as we pause to remember not only those who gave their lives, but also those still impacted by conflict today and to share in a collective hope for peace.”
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon said: “This is an important time to pause and reflect.
“The ceremony is always such a moving reminder of the selfless sacrifices made by so many so we can live freely today.
“I hope residents will join us at the Cenotaph in Katharine Street on Remembrance Sunday at 10.30am and at 11am on Armistice Day, as we remember them.”
Sutton will also hosting Remembrance Day services.
In Cheam, residents are invited to join the Civic Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress for the Civic Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial at 10.50am.
The service will be conducted by Reverend Dr Nicholas Peacock and will be followed by a service at St Dunstan’s Church on Church Road.
On Armistice Day, Tuesday (November 11), an Act of Remembrance will take place at 10.50am in Trinity Square, Sutton, during which a two-minute silence will be observed.
The service will be led by Jeff Richards on behalf of St Nicholas Church, and the choir from Sutton High School will be conducted by Martin French.
Mayor Louise Phelan will attend the ceremony.
