People in the borough can pay tribute to all of those who have died in conflicts across the globe at ceremonies on Sunday, November 9 as well as on days before and after.
The Mayor will lay wreaths on behalf of the Mayor, Councillors and Burgesses of the London Borough of Barnet at the war memorial at St Kilda’s and Finchley United Services Club on Remembrance Sunday at 11am, the Watling Community Centre memorial service at 2pm and will also lay a wreath at the war memorial in Arkley.
The Mayor will lay a wreath at the service at Finchley Memorial Hospital on Friday 7 November, led by Barnet War Memorials Association.
He will also join school children to lay a wreath at St James the Great War Memorial in Friern Barnet on Armistice Day, Tuesday November 11.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Mayor and the Leader of the Council and opposition will lay wreaths to mark Remembrance Sunday at Hendon War Memorial at a service attended by Armed Forces reservists, veterans, cadets, emergency services, multi-faith representatives, scouts and the Salvation Army Band.
The service begins at 10.40am and two minutes of silence will be observed at 11am.
Mayor of Barnet Danny Rich said: “It’s important for us to remember all those who have given their lives for us in wars around the world.
“Remembrance Sunday gives us the opportunity to pay tribute to their sacrifice, and to all those who have lost loved ones in conflict.
“People across the borough can join commemorations to pay their respects to the fallen. Lest we forget.”
Various other locations across Barnet will also be marking Remembrance Sunday on November 9.
In Hendon, Watford Way, the ceremony will start at 10.40am, while New Barnet’s event at the Station Rd War Memorial begins earlier at 9.15am.
East Barnet’s East Barnet Methodist Church War Memorial will start its service at 10.30am.
Remembrance events will also be held at Edgware War Memorial, St Paul’s Church in Mill Hill, St Mary-at-Finchley, the Greek Orthodox Cathedral at Golders Green, St John the Evangelist church in Friern Barnet, and several other locations across the borough all starting at intervals around 10am.
Watling Community Memorial Service at Watling Community Centre will commence at 2pm.
Commemorations are also planned on other days throughout the month.
At Hendon Crematorium, a service will be held on Saturday, November 1, at 10.30am.
Friern Barnet’s St James the Great War Memorial, located on Friern Barnet Lane, will see a service on Tuesday, November 11, at 10.50am, the same time as the Lodge Lane Memorial Bench service.
Additionally, Barnet’s twin towns in France, Chaville and Le Raincy, will receive wreaths for their Armistice commemoration events on November 11.
Barnet Town Hall will display a visual homage to the day, bathed in red light come November 11.
