Baxter’s Court in Hackney shut its doors for the last time on November 2, as part of a rejig of the pub company JD Wetherspoon’s portfolio.
The premises had been likened to an office building, but locals have defended the pub, which has attracted many fans over the years for its unique look, including 69-year-old regular customer Stephen Naishney.
He told the Sun: “It seems over the top to call it ugly.
“I don’t think it’s accurate at all because it’s such a lovely decor.
“You’ve got the terrace area on the first floor and the courtyard out the front.
“You can’t argue with the price can you?
“When these proper pubs get sold it seems that prices tend to go up and they often get turned into gastropubs.”
Nicky Phillip, 65, another regular who started a petition to save the pub, said the community would be “lost” without it.
A customer notice said customers could visit their next nearest Wetherspoon instead – The Rochester Castle in Stoke Newington, a 35 minute walk away.
Other Wetherspoons closures in London in the last two years have included the Alfred Herring in Palmers Green, and the Asparagus in Battersea.
