Havering Council has granted planning permission for Atik, in South Street, to be used as a theatre for a temporary period of three years.
The proposals, put forward by applicant ATIK108SS, aim to make use of the ground and first floors of the vacant club while longer-term redevelopment is being discussed to build almost 300 new homes there.
The planning documents revealed that the applicant approached a range of potential occupiers to run the theatre before the proposals were drawn up.
One representation was received in support of the scheme, according to the planning officer’s report, arguing that temporary use as a theatre will “support a rich and diverse night time economy”.
The planning officer concluded: “The proposal is considered to be acceptable in principle, bringing a vacant and underutilised building back into active use within the town centre, and no significant adverse impacts are expected.
“On this basis, the proposal is recommended for approval.”

The approval has been granted with certain conditions, including that the temporary use begins within one year and ceases by October 31, 2029.
The building must also achieve a “secured by design” accreditation from the Metropolitan Police – which means it must meet certain safety standards – before it can be used as a theatre.
The longer-term redevelopment plans, to replace the nightclub with 294 co-living flats, have been brought before the council but remain at a pre-application stage.
