Havering Council’s place overview and scrutiny sub-committee are set to meet next Tuesday (November 4) to discuss a number of issues ranging from HMOs to the school streets scheme.
Among the agenda items is an update on the rollout of a new food waste service – which the council announced in September will be delayed by several months.
Collection of food waste in a separate bin each week was initially meant to start in October this year, but will now not begin until October 2026.
This is in spite of the Environment Act 2021 requiring local authorities to provide a weekly food waste collection to all households by March 31, 2026.
The postponement is down to a delay in the delivery of collection vehicles, the council previously confirmed, due to large demand from a number of local authorities looking to roll out the service.

However, a council report set to be presented at the meeting reveals that Havering’s collection vehicles are due to be delivered from September to October 2026.
Officers are also in the process of securing food waste caddies and liners, aiming to make this coincide with the vehicle arrivals.
As well as this, the meeting will discuss a potential phased rollout for the scheme, by ward over an eight-week period.
