Firefighters were called to Barking Road when two adults and two children went to hospital following the smell today (October 28) at around 1.18pm.
One of the children later died in hospital whilst receiving treatment.
Fire crews evacuated around 12 people from surrounding properties as a precaution.
Specially trained firefighters carried out a systematic sweep of the affected property, working to detect any hazardous materials present and ventilate the scene.
The incident was eventually stood down for fighters by 4.23pm.
Police are now investigating the matter following the death.
