The Goblin of Lesnes will be brought to life in Lesnes Abbey between October 29 and October 31 and is set to be performed by elite West End talent.
This production has been developed by The Ruined Theatre as part of Bexley’s Night Visions festival.
The play is set in the 12th century and features a creature, part human and part goblin, trapped in the Abbey for centuries.
A tale of secrets, lies, and magic awaits those brave enough to venture to the ruins as night falls and the Goblin emerges.
Councillor Cafer Munur, cabinet member for place shaping, said: “The Goblin of Lesnes promises to be enormous fun for the whole family, with an affordable ticket price to see a new piece of theatre developed by an elite team of creatives.
“Bexley is a place where creativity flourishes and the team behind The Ruined Theatre are a great example of how the borough is attracting amazing creative talent who are fuelling new cultural experiences for local people.”
The Ruined Theatre has been bringing top quality theatre to Abbey Wood and Bexley since 2021, under the artistic direction of Nancy Sullivan, star of Alan Carr’s ITV show Changing Ends.
The theatre company works closely with schools and community organisations, offering opportunities for people to experience the arts first-hand through various projects and mentorships.
Nancy Sullivan, artistic director of The Ruined Theatre and director of The Goblin of Lesnes, said: “This will be one of The Ruined Theatre’s most exciting shows to date.
“Set in the ruins of the Abbey, we are sitting in the tower where The Goblin is trapped.
“As the sun comes down on a fateful night, we see the magic unfold directly in front of us.
“It’s a tale of magic, betrayal and greed.
“A perfect Halloween event for everyone.”
Due to strong demand for tickets, The Ruined Theatre will also be taking the Goblin on tour in November, with two extra indoor performances at Sidcup Storyteller on November 14 and Crossness Engines on November 22.
Tickets for these extra performances go on sale soon.
The Sidcup Storyteller performance will be sponsored by Sidcup Partners, meanwhile, the Crossness Performance will take place in the historic beam engine house and will include transport from Abbey Wood Station on a vintage Routemaster bus, and a ride on Crossness’ narrow-gauge railway.
Night Visions is a festival of light-themed arts events taking place from October to January and has been funded by a grant of £100,000 of investment in the borough from Arts Council England’s National Lottery Project Grants.
Night Visions is part of #CelebratingBexley, a year-long programme of arts, culture and entertainment to mark a range of significant anniversaries including the 60th anniversary of London Borough of Bexley, 500 years since the closure of Lesnes Abbey and the 160th anniversary of Crossness Engines.
