The News Shopper challenged the mayor, asking him about his reaction to the high rate of stabbings in such a short period in one area.
We asked if Khan would reassure and take any action following the spree, and what steps would be taken by police.
A spokesperson for Sadiq Khan said: “The Mayor’s thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Sanchini Thompson and the wider community impacted by knife crime.
“Police have stepped up reassurance patrols in the area and have now arrested a man on suspicion of murder.
“Knife crime has no place in our streets or communities.

“The Mayor is fully committed to doing all he CAN to keep Londoners safe, including providing record funding for the Met police, increasing the number of neighbourhood police officers in hotspot areas and delivering prevention and intervention action through his Violence Reduction Unit to tackle the causes of crime.”
The office for the Mayor of London shared statistics showing knife crime had fallen 12 per cent in 2025/26 compared with the same period the last year.
Analysis of the stats from the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) add that the number of homicides in London in the first nine months of 2025 was lower than any year since monthly homicide records began in 2003.

The Metropolitan Police recently announced it was “ruthlessly prioritising resources and putting more officers on the beat in the busiest parts of London to focus on core policing priorities, protect the public, and tackle areas with high crime.”

However, the areas named as being a priority did not include Lewisham.
Despite these London-wide statistical trends, local people in Catford told News Shopper they are “scared” after the stabbings.

On October 15, police were called to Rushey Green at around 3am. 27-year-old Sanchini Thompson was rushed to hospital but later died.
Only five hours later, a second man was stabbed only minutes away in Mountsfield Park – police have been unable to verify his condition.
In the third incident on October 20 a teenage boy was stabbed on Canadian Avenue.
The very next day, a man in his 20s was stabbed on October 21. The last two victims’ conditions are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing.
The stabbings are not thought by detectives to be connected.
In a recent survey in the street, Bianca said: “I don’t feel safe in this country – I’m not from here, but I’ve lived in the country for nine years.
“I don’t go out in the dark.”
Sarfraz said: “I’ve heard about the stabbings – I saw the road was sealed for two days.
“It happens in the whole of London, but in this area, I am seeing it regularly.”
