The new Asda Express at Limehouse station in Commercial Road is one of nine branches that opened yesterday (October 21) – seven of which were in London.
The station is located just more than a mile away from the former superstore in Anchor Retail Park in Stepney Green.
In early July, Asda confirmed that the Anchor Retail Park branch would close due to an unaffordable increase in rent.
The shop closed for good on September 7.
Asda previously told this paper that around 50 employees would be impacted by this closure and “all possible avenues” to retain these colleagues within the business would be explored.
GMB regional officer Keith Dixon described this as “devastating news” for staff.
GMB Union’s website says it is the “only recognised union” in Asda superstores and warehouses.
Joseph Sutton, vice president Asda Express, foodservice and fuel, said: “We’re thrilled to be opening nine new Express stores this week, including seven in London – an area where we have traditionally had less of a presence in convenience.
“We know customers have looked forward to these stores opening for a long time, and we’re delighted to welcome them in and offer outstanding value across their favourite products.”
Additional services include Costa Coffee machines, ATMs, Amazon collections and returns, and on-demand delivery options through the likes of Uber Eats, Just Eat and Deliveroo.
