Transport for London (TfL) has announced plans to conduct feasibility studies at Becontree and Dagenham East stations, looking at the possibility of creating step-free access.
The two stations are among 17 across London that will be part of the studies.
The decision follows a council campaign which called on TfL to assess the stations.
Council leader Dominic Twomey said: “I wholeheartedly welcome this decision from the Mayor of London to conduct these studies.
“These are two of the borough’s busiest stations, but they lack much-needed step-free access.
“Inclusive transport options are vital for our community, especially for residents and visitors with limited mobility, parents with prams, and elderly members of our borough.
“Hundreds of residents signed our petition asking for TfL to increase accessibility at Dagenham East.”
Unmesh Desai, London Assembly member for City and East, also welcomed the plans.
He said: “It’s fantastic news that TfL is moving forward with making Becontree and Dagenham East stations step-free.
“It will make a massive difference for people with mobility issues, parents with buggies, and older residents.
“I have been lobbying for these improvements and I will continue to do all I can to work with TfL to make them a reality.”
