Epping Forest District Council is encouraging tenants to check their boilers, radiators, extractor fans, alarms, and stopcocks before temperatures drop.
Cllr Smruti Patel, who is responsible for housing, said: “If you need help and support with any of the five checks, let us know and report the problem to housing company Qualis immediately – we’re here to help you enjoy your home. Your report helps us make sure your home stays safe and healthy.”
Tenants are advised to:
- Check boiler pressure
- Turn on the heating to see if radiators need bleeding
- Test extractor fans using a tissue
- Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
- Locate your stopcock in case of a water emergency.
The council services boilers annually and encourages tenants to take action while the weather is still mild.
Any issues should be reported immediately to Qualis, the council’s repairs partner.
The reminder comes ahead of Awaab’s Law coming into effect on October 27.
The law requires social landlords to address damp and mould issues within strict timeframes.
It is named after Awaab Ishak, a two-year-old boy who died from exposure to mould in his home.
