The major supermarket has been spotted placing security tags on £3.60 bottles of Heinz mayonnaise, according to The Sun.
The 540g Heinz Seriously Good Light Mayo, retailing for £3.60, was seen wrapped in plastic netting with a security tag that must be removed at checkout.
The same precaution was taken for the larger 775g bottle, priced at £4.40.
Tesco has also fitted tags to bottles of Napolina olive oil, including the 1L Olio Da Cucina (£5.70), Extra Virgin Olive Oil (£5.50), and the 500ml Light and Mild Olive Oil (£8.95).
The anti-theft measures were spotted on Thursday at the Tesco Express in Central Square, Wembley – just a short walk from Wembley Stadium.
A shopper who photographed the items told The Sun how the move shows how rising inflation is changing shopping habits and security priorities.
They said: “With inflation driving up the price of everyday goods, supermarkets are increasingly treating condiments and pantry staples like luxury items.
“A bottle of mayonnaise, once an unassuming sandwich companion, is now considered a ‘high-risk’ product, locked down against would-be condiment bandits.”
