Police were called to a hospital where a man in his 30s arrived with a knife wound on September 22.
He self-presented after the attack in the Hounslow area of London.
Al Furqan Education Trust, a charity and community centre in Hounslow, has identified the victim as Imam Sheikh Mohamed Yusuf.
The trust said the religious leader was “the victim of an unprovoked stabbing” in a “deeply distressing incident”.
It added that the motive for the attack “remains unknown”, with police adding that it is keeping an open mind as it investigates.
There have been no arrests.
A spokesperson for the Al Furqan Education Trust, Hounslow, posted to X: “Our community experienced a deeply distressing incident involving our Imam, Imam Yusuf, who was the victim of an unprovoked stabbing.
“Alhamdulillah’s, he is currently in a stable condition in hospital and receiving the appropriate care.
“This matter is now the subject of an active police investigation. At this time, the motive remains unknown.
“We kindly urge everyone not to speculate or share unverified information, particularly on social media, as this can hinder the investigation and cause additional distress to the family and community.
“We ask you to keep Imam Yusuf in your duas, if you have information that may assist the authorities, please contact the Masjid Office.”
A spokesperson for the Met said: “Officers were called at 8pm on Monday, September 22 to a West London hospital after a man in his 30s arrived with a knife wound.
“The victim’s injuries have been deemed as non-life threatening or life changing.
“The investigation continues and officers are keeping an open mind about the possible motive for the attack, which happened in the Hounslow area.
“No arrests have been at this stage and enquiries continue.
