The initiative, led by Tower Hamlets Council, is aimed at easing the financial burden of new school starters.
Families with household incomes of up to £50,350 can receive clothing grants for their children entering school for the first time.
The deadline for applications is September 30.
The council’s fund promises to provide thousands of children each year with financial assistance for school uniforms and other necessities.
Children starting primary school this September can receive a grant of £50 each.
Those entering secondary school are eligible for a £150 grant per child.
The initiative is designed to support around 7,000 children annually, amounting to 21,000 children over the next three years.
Executive mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, said the council is the first in the country to be offering support to families with incomes up to £50,350.
“I’m proud that we are leading the way nationally,” he said.
“Starting a new school is a special rite of passage for children, who will be keen to make a happy and confident start, but the costs associated with starting school places an extra financial strain on families.”
The council has contacted parents and carers with information about the scheme and encouraged them to apply.
One mother, whose daughter is starting at Mulberry Academy Shoreditch, said: “This is a positive scheme and really beneficial for families especially with the rising cost of school uniforms and cost of living.
“School blazers and PE kits can be some of the more expensive items and children can grow out of clothing very quickly, so parents need to buy clothing and sometimes spare sets throughout the year.”
Families can visit the council’s website for full details on the application process.
