Police were called soon after 9pm on August 22 to reports of violence.
A 48-year-old man told officers he had been injured and had his headphones stolen by a group of youths in Peckham Rye Park.
A post on social media network Nextdoor by someone who says they know the victim expands on their reported injuries.
It says they were attacked “quite viciously by around eight to 10 youths with face coverings”.
It adds: “He suffered four rib fractures, a partially-collapsed lung, broken nose and damage to his eyes.
“It was not a mugging – the attackers did not take his phone. They were filming the incident.
“He was held down by some of them whilst he was punched and kicked.
“He tried his best to block kicks to the head area (where they were aiming) which were coming from all angles.
“This was a random attack – not targeted.
“The victim is 50, had been with a friend and was walking home. The attackers chased him for a short distance before catching him.”
There have been no arrests but officers confirmed they were supporting the victim during an ongoing investigation.
Police are looking to speak with any witnesses.
