A new website has been launched to help residents, businesses, and stakeholders in the county stay informed and involved in the process of Local Government Reorganisation (LGR), which could lead to major changes by 2028.
Councillor Chris Whitbread, leader of Epping Forest District Council and vice chairman of the Essex Leaders and Chief Executives Group, said: “LGR represents the biggest shake up in local government in decades.
“By bringing clear and impartial information together in one website, the councils of Greater Essex hope everyone will have a better understanding of the opportunities LGR presents as well as the information to participate and engage in shaping the future of local services that matter most.”
The website, essexlgrhub.org, has been launched by council leaders and chief executives from Essex, Southend-on-Sea, and Thurrock as a central platform for clear, accessible information and updates on the future of local government in the region.
It includes an overview of LGR in Greater Essex, an explainer video, the government’s aims, news updates, and frequently asked questions.
Councils are currently developing business cases exploring different options for unitary arrangements.
These business cases will be made available on the website in both full and summary formats as they are finalised.
Councillor Graham Butland, chairman of the Essex Leaders and Chief Executives Group, said: “This is about making sure the people of Essex are informed, empowered, and part of shaping the future of their local services.”
Throughout September, councils across Greater Essex will review the business cases through their own governance processes, with final submissions to the government expected by September 26.
A public consultation is anticipated in the autumn, with a recommendation to the minister on the final proposal expected by March 2026.
Councils across Essex are encouraging residents and businesses to use essexlgrhub.org as a comprehensive source of information and to take part in the consultation when it launches.
