South east London is blessed with green spaces, riverside routes and leafy trails that offer the perfect excuse to stretch your legs while soaking up the last of the sunshine.
Here are five of the best walking routes to try before summer’s over.
1. The Green Chain Walk – Thames Barrier to Eltham Palace
This classic trail is one of south east London’s gems.
Linking the dramatic Thames Barrier with the historic beauty of Eltham Palace, the route takes in woodlands, commons and sweeping views along the way.
Highlights include Severndroog Castle and stretches of tranquil parkland that feel far removed from the city bustle.
2. Crystal Palace to Nunhead – Green Chain highlights
For something shorter but packed with variety, the Crystal Palace to Nunhead section of the Green Chain has it all.
From the quirky dinosaur sculptures at Crystal Palace Park to the Horniman Museum gardens, Dulwich Park’s leafy lanes and the atmospheric Nunhead Cemetery, this walk feels like a tour of south London’s character in under three hours.
3. The Waterlink Way – South Norwood to Greenwich
Following the Pool and Ravensbourne rivers, the Waterlink Way is an eight-mile path that weaves through South Norwood Country Park, Ladywell Fields and Brookmill Park before finishing at the Cutty Sark in Greenwich.
With riverside views, wildlife, and plenty of green space to pause for a picnic, it’s a peaceful antidote to busy city life.
4. Dulwich Nature Walk
Between quiet streets and village-style charm, this route takes in Dulwich Park, Belair Park and shady wooded paths.
It’s an easy stroll, ideal for an afternoon wander, with plenty of cafés nearby if you fancy finishing with a coffee or slice of cake.
5. Avery Hill Park Circular
Avery Hill Park offers a quick but refreshing circular walk that takes around half an hour.
With open lawns, tree-lined avenues and space to relax, it’s the kind of walk that reminds you summer isn’t quite over yet.
