The voluntary role involves joining the council’s audit and governance committee to offer an objective view on the authority’s assurance frameworks and support good governance.
A spokesman for Epping Forest District Council said: “We’re looking for an independent member to join our audit and governance committee.
“This is an exciting opportunity to engage with various challenges and have a more active role in your local community.”
The successful candidate will serve a three-year term and receive a £500 annual allowance, subject to approval by the full council.
Meetings are held in the evenings at the council’s civic offices, with around five sessions each year lasting about two hours.
To be eligible, applicants must live or work in the Epping Forest district or have a local connection.
They cannot be current or former members or officers of Epping Forest District Council, or any town or parish council in the district within the past five years.
Applications should be sent to Owen Sparks, strategic director and section 151 officer, by 5pm on Wednesday, September 3.
Interviews will take place later in September.
