Dabners Pet Shop, located at 26-27 Surrey Street beside the Surrey Street Market, first opened in 1959 and has since served generations of animal lovers, families, and loyal customers from across the borough.
In July, the shop announced that, “with great sadness,” it would be closing permanently on August 16.
The owner thanked thousands of customers for their loyalty and support but said they had been forced to close due to rising costs, which were made “particularly bad by the present government”.
They also blamed the sharp increase in shoplifting, which made it impossible for the family-run business to continue.
However, the owners have said they’re here to stay after managing to “weather the storm” and that public support kept them fighting strong.
A statement on the Dabners website says: “Your Premier Pet Shop is here to Stay.
“Serving Croydon’s Pets & People for over 50 years and we’re not going anywhere.
“Your support keeps us fighting strong.”
