The narrator, Jimmy Mac, said it all began when he intended to take a trip to Stratford but went the wrong way.
He explained in the video: “I was too busy reminiscing about my wasted youth to realise that I was on completely the wrong branch of the Elizabeth line.
“So instead got off at Woolwich home with the Gunners, The Arsenal and some very good pubs indeed.”
Jimmy said there’s one pub in the area he always makes time for.
He continued: “There’s one establishment I particularly like to go to when I’m in the area and that’s Roses which is actually called the Prince Albert.
“The pub was built in the 1840s and even today over 650 years later is the kind of place you’ll never get bored in.”
Behind its narrow Victorian frontage lies a bright room with dark wood tables and panelling and a mural of the Woolwich ferry towards the back.
For many years a regular Good Beer Guide entry the pub still hosts darts and cribbage leagues and occasional live music.
Of the inside, Jimmy said: “Darts fruit machines meat raffles.
“Even the agent of chaos relentlessly hammering late era Scott Walker on the jukebox couldn’t dampen the vibes.”
He added that it remains a popular and varied spot.
He said: “With a quiz on Thursdays karaoke on Fridays and weirdly the occasional drum and bass night the pub regularly pulls in a rich tapestry of customer.
“For this convivial all-encompassing ambiance Roses gets an eight.”
On the toilets, Jimmy explained: “The toilets are nothing to write home about even if one were in the habit of regularly writing home about toilets.”
Still, he was charmed by the décor.
He added: “But the ascetic was hauled up by its Morris Esque carpet mahogany panelling and fake fire on the Samsung. For its interior it gets a nine.”
The long bar at Roses has six handpumps though only a few are in regular use. Jimmy said the drinks selection impressed him adding that “the variety of booze on offer at Roses is excellent with enough continental lager and tiny wine to keep even the pickiest punter p***ed.
He added: “It misses out on the highest marks due to the sheer live laugh lovingness of my gin and tonic glass. For drink selection it scores an eight.
“Simply put the pub is one of the best in London a place where you can while away an ambrosial afternoon on the suds all take a Gary and listen to some Goldie with the pig wizard.”
As with many of his reviews he ended on a more serious note.
Jimmy added: “These kinds of welcoming places are vital for communities across the capital but they’re also unfortunately one of the hardest types of pub to run.”
He warned that pubs like Roses are becoming rare.
Jimmy said: “As more and more London is transformed into a monotonous glass and steel sociopath city in the sky, these are spaces that are becoming increasingly rare.”
Roses stands as a proper Woolwich local – weird warm and entirely its own.
