West Wickham leisure centre has been shut since February 2024, when several structural issues were identified.
Originally Bromley Council said that it planned to refurbish the building but changed its proposals earlier this year after the removal of asbestos allowed the structure to be examined more closely.
The local authority has now determined that parts of the centre are beyond economic repair, so will need to be demolished and rebuilt at a cost of £22 million.
The refurbished leisure centre was initially earmarked to reopen in 2026, but this date has now been pushed back to 2028.
Last week, planning permission was granted for the partial demolition of the building, paving the way for works to start within weeks.
A refurbishment of the parts of the leisure centre that will remain is already under way, including works to the learner pool.
Bromley Council has also submitted a planning application with the new designs for the rebuilt leisure centre.
It will have a red brick exterior, complimenting the newly reopened West Wickham Library.
Proposals also including a new café, gym, reception area, changing rooms and a competition-length swimming pool.
Cllr Yvonne Bear, Bromley executive councillor for renewal, recreation and housing, said: “This is an important step towards the delivery of this new state-of-the-art leisure centre, with the attractive designs seeking to further tie together our public spaces in West Wickham.
“We are in a fairly unique position among local authorities of being able to press ahead with a substantial investment in our leisure provision, and I know many residents will be excited to see further progress on site shortly as we secure this centre for many years to come.”
Leisure developer Alliance Leisure is set to carry out the works on behalf of the council, with the Etec Group acting as the main contractor.
