Blue Garage UK, a social enterprise and makerspace in the heart of Lewisham, launched the pilot project after winning council funding.
The new hub is set to support early-stage innovators and spur future investment in textile innovation.
Since opening in December 2024, Blue Garage has assisted over 30 startups and built a vibrant community of more than 100 members, including engineers, designers, artists, and educators.
The organisation aims to bridge the ‘innovation gap’ that often hinders promising ideas from becoming commercially successful.
The new textiles innovation hub is part of that mission.
The hub will provide materials and textiles innovators with access to state-of-the-art facilities, including prototyping technologies, and hands-on support to develop their products, connect with customers, and secure investment.
Blue Garage’s initiative was made possible by their successful bid for the council’s 2025-26 Supporting Local Business Fund (UK Shared Prosperity Fund).
Councillor Ese Erheriene, cabinet member for business, jobs, and skills, said: “This new programme is a big step forward for Lewisham—underlining the council’s commitment to backing local talent and building an economy that works for everyone.
“It’s a team effort that puts Lewisham on the map as a national leader in innovation, inclusive enterprise, and community-led growth.
“Since opening in 2024, Blue Garage has been a dynamic space for both local and international innovators to experiment, create, and grow in Lewisham.
“Initiatives like the Textile Innovation Hub are key to unlocking new possibilities for entrepreneurs, and helping advance our vision for sustainable, forward-looking creative enterprise.”
The hub is expected to create opportunities for grassroots enterprises to grow, while helping to break down barriers for underrepresented creators and founders in these industries.
The council supported Blue Garage’s opening in 2024 by funding the fit-out through their Affordable Workspace Grant stream of UK Shared Prosperity Funding.
Blue Garage’s latest project is set to unlock new possibilities in a sector ripe for innovation.
