Officers were called to Stevenage train station at around 7.20am today (August 8).
Medics also arrived but a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The death is not being treated by police as suspicious.
All lines between Hitchin and Stevenage are closed by emergency services, with “major disruption” to London trains.
Trains at London Kings Cross are cancelled, revised or delayed by up to 60 minutes.
Disruption is expected until 12pm.
A BTP spokesperson said: “Officers were called to Stevenage railway station at around 7.20am today (8 August) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
