Teacher Leah Firmstone, 25, from Epping, is among nearly 500 UK Scouts taking part in the World Scout Moot in Portugal, a major event that brings together 9,000 Scouts from across the globe.
The Moot, now in its 16th edition, runs from July 25 in Lisbon to its conclusion in Porto, offering participants a packed itinerary of cultural and community-focused activities.

“I’m so excited after hearing amazing stories from other Scouts.
“I went on a smaller Scout trip to Switzerland a few years ago and it really motivated me to go on a bigger trip.
“As part of the Moot, I’m going on a hiking expedition to a wolf sanctuary, only Scouts can give you these sorts of opportunities.”
During the event, participants take part in a four-day expedition, travelling alongside Scouts from other countries and following one of 100 routes through remote regions of Portugal.
After the expedition, the group gathers at the Ovar camp base for several days of Scouting activities, cultural exchange, and skill-building before the final celebration.

Also representing Epping is Zoe Grimshaw, 26, a heritage specialist and Scout volunteer.
Ms Grimshaw said: “Scouting, history and culture have always been a big part of my life, so I’m really excited to dive into the Portuguese take on all of that.
“Being part of the Moot is such a unique chance – not only to experience something new, but also to support the amazing young adults taking part in this adventure.
“I can’t wait to be right there with them, soaking it all in and helping make it unforgettable.”
The theme of this year’s Moot is ‘engage,’ encouraging Scouts to build connections through cross-cultural understanding, community involvement and friendship.
Chief Scout Dwayne Fields offered his support to the UK contingent before their departure.
Mr Fields said: “A massive good luck to Leah and Zoe and all the UK Scouts who are at the World Scout Moot.
“This is an amazing opportunity to discover yourself and the world around us, while exploring how you can create meaningful change.
“The true international spirit of Scouting will shine through, with so many chances to learn from other Scouts around the world.
“I know each UK Scout attending will grab the opportunity to create memories, friendships and skills to last a lifetime.”
The Moot not only offers participants the chance to experience new cultures and adventures but also helps them develop the confidence and skills needed to make a positive impact in their own communities.
These kinds of opportunities are made possible with the support of organisations like the People’s Postcode Lottery.
Scouts UK continues to champion the role of Scouting in helping young people build resilience, find belonging and take on challenges that shape their future.
Through international gatherings like the Moot, young adults are given a platform to grow, connect, and contribute to the wider world—one adventure at a time.
