Havering Council has received a planning application seeking to completely redevelop the Jewson site in South Street.
The proposal requires planning permission for the “redevelopment of the existing builders merchants to provide a new builders merchants branch, including the demolition of the existing building”.
The new branch would include a sales area, warehouse, tool hire and associated office under the new plans.
There would also be car and cycle parking spaces, fencing and landscaping.
At present the Jewson site, which spans more than 80,000 square feet, consists of a merchants branch building, two metal storage shelters, and an external area for storing, loading and parking.
According to architect WE Architecture, on behalf of STARK Building Materials UK Limited, the Jewson branch is in a poor state.
They wrote: “The existing building is in a dilapidated condition and has reached the end of its life. The size, layout and construction of the existing building means that refurbishment is not a viable option.
“Therefore, a comprehensive redevelopment to replace the existing building and reconfigure the site layout is necessary to meet the business needs to operate more efficiently and to upgrade the facilities to meet modern sustainability standards.”
If approved, the works would “regenerate” the “outdated and inefficient builders merchants site”, resulting in a larger main building and covered storage area.

WE Architecture wrote in a design & access statement: “Whilst the proposed main building and covered storage are larger than existing, the scale of the proposed building / structure is compatible with the surroundings and is not dominant or overbearing in the street scene.”
Other changes include a slight reorganisation of the proposed new structures to make best use of the space, alongside new impermeable concrete flooring and extra parking provisions.
A decision will be made in October as to the suitability of the proposal.
