Croydon Council described the prosecution as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle illegal waste dumping and keep the borough clean.
Muhammad Ali, 46, from Thornton Heath, was fined after pleading guilty to fly-tipping following an incident in August 2023.
The offence came to light when a councillor spotted a large pile of renovation waste dumped on the green between Pollards Hill West and Pollards Hill South.
Jason Perry, executive mayor of Croydon, said: “Fly-tipping is a blight on our borough – it makes our streets look uncared for, it damages the environment, and it costs thousands of pounds in council resources to clear.
“This court case shows that if you dump waste in Croydon, you will be held responsible and you will face the full weight of the law.
“Whether it’s abandoned cars, selling illegal tobacco products or fly-tipping, we won’t tolerate this behaviour in Croydon, and we will make those responsible pay for their actions.”
Council officers investigated the incident and traced the waste back to Mr Ali, whose business is located on London Road.
When officers visited the premises, they found ongoing building works and asked Mr Ali for details of how the waste was being disposed of.
Mr Ali did not provide the requested information and later pleaded guilty in court.
He was ordered to pay a total of £7,951.71 by Croydon Magistrates’ Court, including a fine of £890, council costs of £6,705.71, and a victim surcharge of £356.
Mr Perry said: “I take issues that damage Croydon seriously, and the council is actively working to reduce these crimes, with several prosecutions planned over the coming months.”
Croydon Council has urged residents to report fly-tipping through the Love Clean Streets app to help keep the borough tidy.
The council has said this and other prosecutions are part of a broader campaign to restore pride in Croydon.
