Nestled in 240 acres of manicured gardens and lush forest on the shores of Lake Geneva, this iconic palace hotel is the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve returned home.
It’s more than just a luxurious getaway – it’s a sanctuary where elegance, wellness, and family joy coexist seamlessly.
Hotel Royal and Lake Geneva (Image: Evian Resort) From the moment we arrived, the hotel’s Belle Epoque charm embraced us.
Originally built in 1909 in honor of King Edward VII, Hôtel Royal is steeped in history, yet everything about it feels fresh and alive thanks to a remarkable renovation that respects its heritage while enhancing its modern comforts.
You notice it in the elegant frescoes, the contemporary art installations, the curated bookshelves, and the refined interiors that strike a perfect balance between classic grandeur and understated design.
We stayed in a lake-facing suite that was as serene as it was spacious.
Floor-to-ceiling windows opened onto a private terrace where we’d sit each morning, sipping coffee and watching the sun rise over the mirrored waters of Lake Geneva.
The views from the balcony window (Image: Immy Share, Newsquest) The views here are, without exaggeration, extraordinary – stretching from the calm blue lake all the way to the snow-dusted Alps.
It’s the kind of view that quiets your mind and makes you breathe a little deeper.
Hôtel Royal also caters to families, and the Kids Resort, just steps from the main hotel, is a child’s dream come true: immersive, creative, and thoughtfully supervised.
We spent our first afternoon getting a feel for the grounds and quickly realised we didn’t need to go anywhere else.
The resort offers everything: restaurants, a golf academy, a concert hall, even a casino.
And another real “wow” moment came during a private padel lesson.
(Image: Immy Share, Newsquest) Neither of us had played before, but the coach was fantastic – encouraging, funny, and skilled.
Padel turned out to be the perfect blend of tennis and squash, and the hotel’s courts are beautifully maintained.
It was active, challenging, and surprisingly addictive.
Then came the spa. Oh, the spa.
The evian®SPA, which was completely redesigned and re-opened in 2024, is a destination in itself.
Evian Spa (Image: Evian Resort) Spread over 1,700 square meters, it’s both indulgent and deeply restorative.
The design is inspired by the natural water cycle, a concept that sounds abstract until you experience it firsthand.
My favorite element was the snow room, a chilled oasis that followed a steamy sauna and awakened every cell in my body.
I alternated between the cold plunge pool, the calming steam rooms, and the outdoor heated hot tub, which overlooked the forest.
Floating in warm water, watching birds fly overhead and mist rise from the treetops, I felt the kind of calm you can’t manufacture, it just comes from being completely present in a moment of beauty.
And then there’s the food. We dined in all of the hotel’s restaurants, but Les Fresques was an absolute highlight.
Dinner views at Les Fresques (Image: Evian Resort) With its Michelin star and panoramic views, the restaurant served up one of the best meals of my life.
Local ingredients were transformed into imaginative dishes – each course more exquisite than the last.
My sea bass with fennel and lemon confit was perfectly cooked, and other tasters included a potato mousse, a cheese trolley and a chocolate dessert.
The hotel also hosted a European-style brunch, which was far more than your average buffet.
Think flaky croissants still warm from the oven, local cheeses and charcuterie, fresh fruit, made-to-order eggs, and even a table of desserts that looked like they came straight from a patisserie.
The hotel’s attention to detail extended to every bite.
Evenings at the resort were as magical as the days.
After dinner one night, we took the complimentary shuttle to Evian Casino, a glamorous slice of old-world charm.
(Image: Immy Share, Newsquest) We didn’t gamble much, but enjoyed the atmosphere, a cocktail in the art deco bar, and a quick visit to the on-site theater.
Everywhere we went, the staff were unfailingly gracious.
It’s clear that service is taken seriously here, not in a stiff or formal way, but with warmth, pride, and attention to individual needs.
Whether it was helping us plan our activities, setting up spa appointments, everything was done with ease and a smile.
By the time we packed to leave, we felt something rare: truly rested.
Hôtel Royal isn’t just another five-star hotel, it’s a place where well-being isn’t a side benefit, but the very essence of the experience.
Whether you’re there for the wellness, the gastronomy, the family friendliness, or simply the views, you’ll find yourself deeply restored in body and spirit.
I can’t recommend Hôtel Royal at the Evian Resort enough, especially for families.
It’s luxurious without being pretentious, serene without being dull, and rich with experiences that bring people closer to nature, to culture, and to each other. We’ll absolutely be back.
