The 10 High Street Post Office will move to TGJones, a former WHSmith store, which will be renamed Croydon Post Office.
The branch will be managed by TGJones, a retail franchise partner.
Under this proposal, the Post Office will operate a fully franchised network, a model already adopted by over 99% of the UK’s Post Office network.
This change is part of a wider plan to ensure post offices in communities remain sustainable.
TGJones, which became independent from WHSmith in June, operates 464 stores across the UK, including 179 post offices.
The store, still a newsagent, books, stationery, toys and games, DVDs and CDs shop, is close to George Street Station.
The Post Office will be open Monday to Saturday from 9am – 5.30pm, and Sunday from 10am – 4pm, providing 57 hours of service each week, an additional six hours compared to the current opening hours.
The move is expected to offer more convenience for customers, as the Post Office will be open all day Sunday.
The Croydon Post Office will have three open plan serving positions, with two self-service machines to be introduced later.
In the meantime, two additional temporary serving counters will be provided.
The shopping centre has two car parks, Whitgift car park and Centrale multi-storey car park, both with designated disabled parking bays.
Public transport is also available.
Current Post Office employees will have the opportunity to transfer to the new branch.
The Whitgift Centre location is also close to George Street Station.
The same range of Post Office services will be available at the new location.
The proposed relocation is subject to a consultation process that will close on September 17.
Customers can share their views during the consultation online at postofficeviews.co.uk, with the branch code 009013.
Submissions can also be made via email to comments@postoffice.co.uk, by post to Freepost YOUR COMMENTS, or by telephone 03452 66 01 15 or Textphone 03457 22 33 55.
This move is part of a larger plan by the Post Office to ensure long-term sustainability and service delivery in communities across the UK.
The decision to operate on a franchise basis is based on the success of this model in the majority of the Post Office network.
The change in management and location is expected to benefit the Croydon community by providing extended service hours and a more accessible location.
The Whitgift Centre has been home to the former WHSmith store for more than 50 years.
The store still operates as a newsagent, and books, stationery, toys and games, DVDs and CDs shop.
TGJones separated from WHSmith in June and now operates 464 stores on high streets, in shopping centres and retail parks across the UK.
The company also manages 179 Post Offices.
The Post Office will continue to provide the same range of services at the new location.
