The announcement follows protesters demonstration about immigration outside Britannia International Hotel in Marsh Wall today (July 22).
At the time, there were unconfirmed reports circulating on social media about the hotel being used to house asylum seekers.
A spokesperson for Tower Hamlets Council has since said: “We are aware of the Government’s decision to use the Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf to provide temporary accommodation for asylum seekers.
“It is important that the Government ensures that there is a full package of support for those staying at the hotel.
“We are working with the Home Office and partners to make sure that all necessary safety and safeguarding arrangements are in place.”
Police officers stood in a line side-by-side at the entrance to the hotel during the demonstration.
Other images showed people holding flags.
It follows demonstrations in Epping at the Bell Hotel, which Essex Police said had turned into “mindless thuggery”.
Demonstrations in Epping last Thursday (July 17) were after a series of protests since 38-year-old asylum seeker Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu was charged with sexual assault after an incident where he is alleged to have attempted to kiss a 14-year-old girl.
He denied the charge when he appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
According to Booking.com “it is currently not possible to make reservations” for the Britannia International Hotel.
