The works began on Monday (July 7) and are expected to last until October 31.
A temporary traffic order has been put in place by Barking and Dagenham Council.
The project involves reinforcing a gas main to support redevelopment works and is divided into nine phases.

The order, however, will remain in force for 18 months to be re-introduced should further works be required.
Throughout the duration of the project, waiting and loading are prohibited on certain sections of West Bank and Hertford Road during all phases.
Phase 1, which has already started, prevents all traffic from entering a section of Highbridge Road leading to Four Gates Bridge and suspends a pedestrian crossing and a loading bay outside the Halcyon.
In Phase 2, certain footpaths and a cycle lane in Highbridge Road will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists.
During Phase 3, a section of Highbridge Road leading to Four Gates Bridge will be closed to all traffic.
In Phase 4, a different section of Highbridge Road will be closed, and a banned left turn will be introduced for HGVs and buses.
The same restrictions apply in Phase 5, with additional road closures – including the access road to the Ibis hotel and Premier Inn.
Phase 6 will see more sections of Highbridge Road closed, with a banned right turn for HGVs and buses.
Other sections of Highbridge Road will be closed for phases 7, 8 and 9, with a banned left turn for HGVs and buses from the access road from Tesco into the road.
Finally, phase 9 will see the access road to Tesco shut for a distance of around 17 metres from its junction with Highbridge Road.
Alternative routes for both pedestrians and vehicles will be maintained and clearly signed throughout the project, according to the council.
Temporary traffic light signals will control traffic flow at specific locations during each phase.
