This can turn an otherwise comfortable vehicle into a sweltering, unpleasant space to operate.
It is for this reason that I started looking for affordable, and even free, ways to keep cool while out for a drive.
Several methods came up during my search, with one, which was recommended by a number of websites like WikiHow, catching my attention.
I tried this totally free life hack for keeping cars cool during a heatwave without AC
I first wetted a cloth and placed it in the freezer (Image: Newsquest) This life hack for keeping your car cool during a heatwave or warm temperatures involves wetting a cloth or rag and placing it in the freezer for a set amount of time before attaching it to the front of a blower.
The idea behind this is that when warm air starts blowing out from the vent, as it so often does before setting off, the cold cloth will cool the car and, hopefully, the driver down.
To test this out, I decided to take the car for a quick spin without pressing the AC button to see if the rag method actually cooled me down while out and about.
The wet rag was placed in front of the AC vent (Image: Newsquest) While the weather where I am isn’t anywhere close to the extremes being endured by those in some parts of the country, the car was unpleasantly warm.
After setting off, I noticed the cold air blowing on my face almost instantly, and the car began to cool down over the next five minutes.

However, a massive drawback was that the cold rag would dry up in no time, meaning it would lose its effectiveness very quickly.
However, by the time this happened, the car was already much cooler, and the air being blown at me from the vents was much more refreshing.
Would I try this hack again instead of using my AC, which can be a pain in the neck to get going? I would definitely consider it.
