Havering Council has proposed a new safety improvement scheme for the junction of A1306 New Road, Upminster Road North and Upminster Road South.
A council study found that up to 1,700 vehicles per hour use New Road, “regularly” reaching speeds of up to 45 mph, 5mph over the speed limit.
Records show that there have been ten accidents in which people were injured, although the council does not make it clear when this study was carried out or for how long.
The proposed project – funded by Transport for London (TfL) – includes a new staggered pedestrian crossing along both Upminster Road North and Upminster Road South, with an extended pavement on the south east corner of the junction to allow for this.
Havering Council said this is to help improve safety for school children in particular.

Several changes are also proposed to the New Road lanes at the junction, such as an extra exit lane and the shortening of the existing right-turn lane on the south arm of New Road, as well as the merging of two lanes on the exit from the junction.
Right-turn pockets currently in Upminster Road would be reallocated to New Road, and protected with traffic islands on either side.
The existing give-way arrangement in the centre of the junction is also set to be replaced with right-turn pockets, while separate traffic light phases are proposed for Upminster Road North and Upminster Road South.

A second set of safety improvements has also been put forward for Pettits Lane in Romford.
Residents are invited to have their say on the proposals via a public consultation, which opened today (June 27).
