The ranking followed Rightmove’s annual Happy at Home study that saw more than 35,000 feedback and participate.

Respondents had their say on 15 different happiness factors, including access to amenities, employment opportunities, access to green spaces and more.

Barking and Dagenham was rated lowest in London for happiness and 218th out of 220 nationwide.

We have pulled together a list of top-rated attractions on Tripadvisor that show there are places that make people happy in the borough.

1. History

History in the borough is rich and plentiful, with a number of historic sites that are well worth a visit.

Tudor tales and architecture are at your fingertips at Eastbury Manor House in Eastbury Square, Barking.

The National Trust site is managed by the council and offers discovery walks, a walled garden, rare preserved 17th century chamber paintings, and the chance to catch temporary exhibitions.

The Elizabethan gentry house is believed to have been built between 1560 and 1573 by Clement Sisley.

Those in search of more information about the heritage of the borough can find answers in the archives and exhibitions at Valence House Museum.

It is the only surviving manor house in Dagenham, with medieval roots and a moat that still partially surrounds the museum.

It boasts an extensive collection of almost 30,000 items and has previously been named by the Guardian as one of the 50 best free things to do in London.

2. Green spaces

The borough should not be discounted for its access to green spaces, with several well-rated parks on offer such as Mayesbrook Park and Eastbrookend Country Park.

Both parks are among seven that last year received the Green Flag Award for achieving international quality marks for parks and green spaces.

The land which is now known as Eastbrookend Country Park was once used as a sand and gravel quarry and infill site.

Mayesbrook Park features a nature reserve, restored river landscape, adventure playgrounds and more across its 40 hectares.

It has been awarded the Mayor of London’s Safer Parks Silver award for its policing and site safety standards.

3. Independent pubs

The Acorn in Longbridge Road, Barking is a 19th century gem of an independent pub, with 170 years of history.
