Curtis Moran, 23, was found dead at the Cranbrook Hotel in Coventry Road, Ilford, on June 12.
But his home address was given in court on Thursday (June 26) as Oval Grange, Hartlepool.
“The Metropolitan Police Service referred the death to me as it appeared to them that Mr Moran’s death was unnatural,” senior coroner Graeme Irvine told East London Coroner’s Court.
“They had been called to the Cranbrook Hotel after concerns were raised about Mr Moran. They entered his hotel room and found Mr Moran in the bathroom.”
A post-mortem confirmed Mr Moran had died from a cause of death typically attributed to suicide.
However, the Recorder is not reporting it due to Samaritans guidelines designed to prevent copycat cases.
Police found no note of intent, the court heard, but they later found Mr Moran had made two previous attempts on his own life.
“Given those circumstances, it seems to me that the threshold for opening an inquest has been triggered in this case,” Mr Irvine said.
Inquests are held in public, in the public interest, to investigate unnatural or unexplained deaths and whether future similar deaths might be avoidable.
“This will need to be explored in a public hearing,” the coroner ruled.
He asked his staff to obtain a statement from Mr Moran’s family about “who Mr Moran was in life, what they know about the circumstances of the death and any concerns that they have”.
He also ordered disclosure of Mr Moran’s GP records and asked his officers to find out whether Mr Moran was known to or receiving care from mental health services either in County Durham or in east London.
The final inquest was provisionally scheduled for October.
