Officers began pursuing a car after it was alerted by an automatic number plate recognition software at the junction of Blackhorse Road and Coutenay Road at 8.15am on June 6.

The car stopped when it crashed into a van, with the driver allegedly then attacking an officer while possessing a weapon.

There are conflicting reports about injuries from the police and ambulance service.

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said no injuries were reported but the London Ambulance Service says a man was rushed to hospital “as a priority”.

The suspected driver of the car, a 47-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, possession of an offensive weapon and attempted GBH after allegedly assaulting an officer.

In the most recent update, he remains in custody for questioning.

Blackhorse Road was closed after the incident with buses and cars diverted away from the crime scene.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “At 8.15am on Friday, June 6, police pursued a car at the junction of Blackhorse Road and Courtenay Road, Walthamstow, following an ANPR activation.

“The car stopped after colliding with a van on the road. No injuries were reported.

“Enquiries are ongoing. Please call police on 101 with the reference 1462/6Jun if you were a witness or have any information which may help.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 8.28am today (June 6) to reports of a road traffic collision on Blackhorse Road, Walthamstow.

“We sent ambulance crews to the scene and treated a man before taking him to a major trauma centre as a priority.”
