Barking and Dagenham council celebrated the dedication of people who help others in their spare time during 2025’s Volunteers’ Week, from June 2 to June 8.
Over the year, 332 volunteers contributed 19,398 hours to assist at community hubs, support vulnerable young people and preserve the green spaces and heritage sites.
The council hosted an event to appreciate these local heroes.
The ‘Star of the Year’ awards were given to seven people, and Freddy Thompson was the proud recipient of the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award for his relentless support at Eastbury Manor House and Valence House.
Councillor Saima Ashraf, deputy leader and cabinet member for community leadership and engagement, said: “Our volunteers embody the very best of what this borough stands for.
“Their energy, commitment, and compassion touch every corner of Barking and Dagenham.
“And there are so many more community groups and individuals who give up their time to do good in the borough.
“We are proud to honour them this week and every week.”
