Camden Council is consulting on the final draft of its local plan until June.
The plan sets out the authority’s planning policies, as well as sites earmarked for housing and industrial development, from 2026 until 2041.
Once adopted it will replace the current Camden Local Plan, the site allocations in the Fitzrovia Area Action Plan, and the Camden Site Allocations Plan.
Planning and development is a key priority within the plan, along with the environment.
It is expected that 11,550 additional homes will need to be delivered over a 15-year period.
The plan will outline the height of buildings, which in recent times has been contentious in areas including Kentish Town, Gospel Oak, Swiss Cottage and West Hampstead.
The document, on Camden’s website, says the borough has many attractive and historic neighbourhoods that “contribute greatly to the attractiveness and character of the borough”.
“We need to make sure that new development respects, explores and reveals the character, heritage and distinctiveness of Camden’s valued and special places,” it adds.
“It is important to ensure that we help keep Camden’s social mix and make sure that the borough does not become polarised between wealthy and less well-off residents.”
It also pledges to resist new gambling sites and extensions to existing sites within Camden Town, Kentish Town, Finchley Road and Swiss Cottage, Kilburn High Road and West Hampstead town centres, as well as areas where they would increase the total number above a set, and within 400m of schools.
Plans have to be prepared in accordance with the legal ‘duty to co-operate’, which means there is an opportunity for local people to say what they do and do not want.
Following the close of the consultation, the plan, along with the consultation responses received and supporting evidence, will be submitted to the government for public examination by a planning inspector.
If the plan is approved it will be adopted by the council and used as guidance in planning decisions.
