Police were called to the canal, just off Treaty Street near King’s Cross, on Saturday (May 3) at 12.57pm to reports of a woman and baby in the water.
Members of the public took them both out, and when police arrived both the baby and woman became unwell after having an “unknown substance”.
They were taken to hospital and their conditions are still being assessed, although it’s thought to be non-life threatening.
A cordon remains in place near Treaty Street and Copenhagen Road.
The 27-year-old woman has now been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Police were called to a report of a woman and baby in Regent’s Canal, off Treaty Street, N1 at 12:57hrs on Saturday, 3 May.
“They were both taken out of the water by members of the public. When police arrived both the baby and woman had become unwell after consuming an unknown substance, they were taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service and their conditions are being assessed, but are thought to be non-life threatening.
“Enquiries are ongoing and a scene is in place.”
