New data from the Road Condition Indicator (RCI), which uses SCANNER (Surface Condition Assessment of the National Network of Roads) to assess road quality, shows the current state of roads across England.
Each road is scored Green (no work needed), Amber (may need work soon), or Red (investigation required).
According to data, four per cent of Sutton’s 18.4 miles of major A roads and motorways were scored Red, and a further 24 per cent of roads were scored Amber.
These figures are very similar to 2023, which had four per cent Red, 22 per cent Amber and 73 per cent Green.
Data for Sutton’s minor roads were unavailable.

For the year ending March 2024:
- Four per cent of major roads have a Red score.
- 24 per cent of major roads have an Amber score
- 73 per cent of major roads have a Green score.
The RAC responded to 9,439 pothole-related breakdowns in the first three months of 2025, more than double the number reported between October and December last year.
In a statement on the Sutton Council website, they say Transport for London (TfL) is responsible for maintaining red routes, and the council themselves “can’t take any action to repair problems on these roads”.
Red routes have single red or double red lines and are normally A roads.

Thes reports can be related to potholes, sunken road, road damage, illegal obstructions, and vegetation.
