The crash took place yesterday (April 18) at around 8.46pm, following a police chase that took place in South Norwood Street.
Police on patrol followed a vehicle that was suspected to display cloned number plates, and attempted to stop the vehicle on South Norwood Street at around 8.38pm.
The vehicle failed to stop and subsequently crashed with two other vehicles on Wickham Road at the junction with Shirley Road.
Three people were freed by fire crews after becoming trapped in a car and a further three were taken to hospital.
One person of the six has been left in a life-threatening condition and another man who was driving the pursued vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two 61-year-old men who were in the pursued vehicle were also arrested on suspicion of being carried in a stolen vehicle.
One man was additionally arrested for being in possession of class A drugs and both men remain in police custody.
Road closures were put in place and have since been lifted.
The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards was informed and a referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the incident.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 8.47pm on 18 April to reports of a road traffic collision near the junction of Wickham Road and Shirley Road in Croydon.
“We sent multiple resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, incident response officers, members of our hazardous area response team (HART) and an advanced paramedic. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.
“We treated seven patients at the scene. Sadly, one person was declared dead at the scene. We took one patient to a major trauma centre and took five patients to hospitals.”
