North Weald Bassett, more commonly referred to as North Weald, lies just over 13 miles outside Romford.
The village is a civil parish within the Epping Forest district of Essex, with split postal addresses due to its proximity to the towns of both Harlow and Epping.
In the 11th century, the village is understood to have been one of the most thickly wooded places in Essex.
It is rumoured that these woods were notorious for robberies in the thirteenth century, to the extent that six acres of woodland were transformed into crop land with royal permission.
One of the most notable attractions of North Weald Bassett is North Weald Airfield.
The aerodrome played as a pivotal fighter station during the First World War, particularly for Home Defence squadrons.
Today, visitors can watch aircraft taking off and landing on its runway and can even book flying experiences with pilots.
The airfield has its own museum on the ground that was once the main entrance to the Battle of Britain fighter base, known at the time as RAF North Weald.
Inside, visitors can learn more of the airfield’s story and use since its opening in 1916.
Rosey Lea Café & Tea Rooms is situated alongside the runway, providing customers with a view of the landing strip with both indoor and outdoor seating.
The airfield also plays host to North Weald Market, which is held every Saturday.
Each week, around 300 stall holders selling fashion, food and home items flock to the grounds at 8am, before packing up at 3pm.
North Weald Market has become somewhat of a TikTok viral sensation thanks to videos providing a sneak peek of what is on offer.
The village’s lone pub, The King’s Head, claims to be one of the most ancient pubs in Essex.

It is a striking black and white half-wood structure, some of which dates back nearly 450 years.
The timbers that add to its charm are understood to have been built originally using those from old ships.
North Weald Station lies nearby and forms part of the Epping Ongar heritage Railway.
