Built in 1939, the bridge was painted blue-grey during World War II for camouflage, earning the title of London’s “most boring” bridge.
However, it has now been given a facelift with new lighting as part of an ongoing commitment to improving street scenes across the borough.
This forms part of the council’s efforts to instil pride in public spaces.
The new lights aim to make the bridge more visually appealing while respecting its historical roots, as Wandsworth celebrates its year as the London Borough of Culture.
Jenny Yates, councillor responsible for transport, said: “Wandsworth Bridge is a vital river crossing.
“This lighting scheme makes it a striking and inviting part of the local streetscape.
“This is just one example of how we’re working to create more pride in our streets and public spaces for everyone in Wandsworth.”
The bridge’s transformation marks a shift from its previous dull appearance to a more vibrant and inviting feature of the area, while still maintaining its unique character.
